At St Paul's, we follow a scheme called 'Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics'.
This scheme ensures that our staff have the knowledge and determination to teach every child to read, regardless of their age, background or need.
Read Write Inc. encourage staff to teach using a toy frog called 'Fred'. Fred can only 'speak' using his sounds. When sounding out words, children are taught to 'Fred Talk' the words using the sounds that they have been taught in phonics, rather than using the letter names. 'Fred Talk' may be a term that your child uses at home when decoding or spelling words.
The RWI programme allows children to move through different coloured groups as they learn more sounds. An outline of each group is described in the document linked below:
